Internet Access Blues
Published on October 16, 2004 By averjoe In Personal Computing
The home network I used to get on the Internet is down. I think I mentioned in a past blog that the ISP used by the person I access the web through had connection problems that were resolved.

Well, the situation just as quickly (a day or so later) became unresolved. I now have to access the Internet through other means, which is just not convenient at all.

In order to try and help out I attempted to find out if a state utilities agency regulated the ISP (in this case the telephone company named Verizon) services provided by this company. They say they did not.

I think the Federal Communication Commission regulates Internet service provided by telecommunication companies so I guess I’ll have to check out their web site to see if they could help solve this problem.

What is the problem you ask? From what I was told Verizon disconnected DSL services because of some sort of maintenance issue I guess at the hub that serves our area and promised to have the service up and running on October first and when that didn’t happen it became October fifth and then eighth, tenth and now on the twentieth.

Also there have been multiple reasons given for the service being out. The maintenance reason sounds kind of lame besides there have been no reports of a general interruption in DSL internet access in our neighborhood which would be the case if there were maintenance or restructuring being done at a hub and so it seems ‘fishy’ stories are being given by the ISP for whatever reason (although they are allowing access through a modem while the problem is being dealt with which doesn’t really help me because I have no modem in my computer and I am not near a telephone outlet anyway.

Lucky for me most of the time I write my post first in a word processing program and then copy and paste it into my blog. Still the inconvenience is a royal pain in the ass.

I rarely see a company act the way Verizon has concerning this problem although Microsoft does comes to mind (their customer service has improved a little though).

The multiple reasons given for the problem indicates disorganization and an untrained work force. I ask again, “what’s going on at Verizon”?
