The Jews killed Christ. No, this is not just my opinion. It is the story told in the New Testament of the Bible. The Jewish priest leadership and other Jewish leaders were angry and alarmed at this upstart Jesus coming around and proclaiming that he was the savior they were all waiting for.
They were alarmed because this heretic was also developing a following that attributed all sorts of miracles to Jesus. Jewish priest and leaders felt threatened by this self appointed savior who threatened long held traditions, and values and their positions within the small sect of people that called themselves Jews. These people viewed themselves as the chosen people of an all powerful, all knowing god.
The jewish leaders thought, ‘would you look at this. Where does this guy get off calling himself the savior’? Most of the reported miracles were not really that impressive anyway although raising the dead was a good one (although maybe he was in a zombie state or it was a magicians trick thought many).
The Jewish leaders appealed to the Roman officials and branded Jesus a rabble-rouser that could threaten the stability of the Roman empire (not saying that the Roman officials brought into this view). In this way according to the Bible the Jews did have Jesus (also a Jew) killed.
I bring this subject up because it is in the news. Never has so much noise been made about a film in a long time. I guess Mel Gibson can expect good sells on opening week. Word of mouth and the opinions of the movie critics will determine how well sells overall are.
Who killed Jesus is not really that important as far as the overall Bible narrative is concerned. The point is that Jesus died for the sins of all mankind. His half human essence and half god essence made him able to serve the role of sacrificial lamb. He fulfilled his destiny as preordained by the Father (part of god that makes up the Trinity of God according to some Christian denominations-not all Christians believe in a Trinity).
There are a lot of criticisms I can raise about Gibson’s movie based only on the clips I have seen of the film from the physical characteristics of the people portrayed to the use of a cross. Some historians argue that Jesus was more likely nailed to a spike like wood structure. Hands were nailed one on top of the other with arms over his head instead of arms spread out across a cross structure.
